It was founded in 1955 by Stanley Thornburn,
the son of the Chief Engineer of Crossley Bros Motors, who
had trained as an industrial valuer with his uncle's firm
in Manchester before, during and after the Second World War.
The firm's roots go back however to
the turn of the century when the need
for industrial valuers began to emerge.
Its initial development was based
on the rise of the textile industry in the North-West of England
but subsequent progress has taken the firm into many different
and technologically advanced industries all over Europe.
Thornburn & Co Ltd.'s first valuation was
in October 1955 when the machinery and stock belonging to
Box Packages Ltd
in Hulme were assessed at £19,000. Contrast this with
one of the most recent assessments – a valuation for
insurance purposes of the assets of a major chemical company
where the replacement cost was assessed at an amount in excess
of £300 million.
Thornburn & Co Ltd. has been managed
since 1979 by Arthur Broadhurst, supported by a dedicated
team and selected consultants for specialisms.
Arthur Broadhurst is a Chartered Surveyor
with wide experience of valuations of buildings and machinery
for all sorts of purposes in Europe. He is fluent in German
and has a working knowledge of French. Arthur speaks regularly
on valuation subjects at seminars and is a joint author of
Valuations: Principles into Practice published by Estates
Gazette. |

All industries, even service ones, are affected
by developments in Europe and Thornburn & Co Ltd. has enthusiastically
courted opportunities to work abroad.
Thornburn & Co Ltd. obtains contracts
to work in other parts of Europe from British and American
companies which value the experience of a company with local
contacts familiar with values in Europe ready to provide local
advice and knowledge of the Approved European Property Valuation
Standards.
Valuations of property and plant and machinery
in the United Kingdom and Europe are delivered speedily and
cost effectively for balance sheet and insurance purposes.
All Chartered Surveyors are regulated
by the Red Book, the mandatory
Appraisal & Valuation Manual, published by The Royal Institution
of Chartered Surveyors. Thornburn's valuers and consultants
are qualified members of the RICS and have taken an active
role in ensuring that the valuation profession,
and education of surveyors and valuers
in particular, develops.
Professional qualification alone without
practice experience offers a client little more than an academic
approach to an assignment. This is not the case at Thornburn & Co Ltd. where experienced personnel and management are actively
involved in on-site valuation work. |
